Holy moly! This author makes some endings.... I'm never quite sure if I'm pissed off or in awe of her ability to surprise. And this book did not disappoint. I am both pissed off and majorly freaking surprised by the ending. Like uber pissed... can't believe what freaking happened, happened. Sheesh.... talk about needing a Xanax to get over a book.....

The writing was good as always and as always the grammar sucked. There were so many missing words (the, and, of type thing) or double words (the like the) that it actually did start getting on my nerves this book but probably because the plot wasn't as fast paced as I'm used to from the rest in this series.

This book was mostly about Dona and Gabriel's romance. The mystery and the EXTREMELY slow burn. It was so different than what I'm used to for this series that it kind of completely through me off..... and then the last 10% of the book happened and I was like, "Oh, there they are! There are my ruthless people!!!"

The past three books' endings have pissed me off but in three very different ways.
1) end of RP series: that ending just pissed me off to high heaven. It felt like a selfish copout on the MC's part. But I have to admit that the ending of this book redeemed it just a teeny tiny bit.
2) children of vice: that ending pissed me off because I wasn't ready for it to be over and the cliff hanger was super hangy.. like had me tilting off the edge of the cliff.
3) children of ambition: "OMG OMG WTF?!?!" The reaction to the ending of this book. There was so much I liked, loved, and even absolutely hated. Remember that metaphorical cliff is was tilting off of at the end of the last book? Well, this one has left me dangling from my freaking fingertips with no footholds. AND I HAVE NO CLUE WHEN THE NEXT BOOK COMES OUT!!! This is a grave injustice. No... I'm not pouting ):

All in all, I enjoyed the book. Wish the plot would have moved a little faster. Enjoyed the mystery behind who Gabriel was but it went on a little bit too long. Would most definitely recommend. Would have been five stars if not for so many grammar mistakes.

Children of Ambition Children of Vice Book 2 edition by JJ McAvoy Romance eBooks Reviews

Donatella Callahan.......The only daughter of Melody and Liam Callahan of the Callahan Mafia Family. Being the strong, feisty, stubborn, loyal sister to her brothers, Liam and Wyatt, has its difficulties. Wanting power and obtaining power is an evan bigger struggle for Donatella. But life without her parents also brings a lot of responsibilities and an even bigger awareness that she will never have the power that she craves because she is only the sister to Liam, the Ceann na Conairte.

But Donatella’s story is a mystery of sorts. A mystery man, Gabriel, appears as Donatella’s fiancé. She’s not having any part of it and the story is really more an uncovering of the foundation that is Donatella Callahan. Donatella and her brother’s, Donatella and Gabriel, Donatella and her cousin Helen, Donatella and her parents, and the how and whys of how Donatella came to be.

This story isn’t really a romance but a testament to patience and perseverance on Gabriel’s part to get Donatella to even acknowledge him. I understand that the romance will come in a spin off series of Donatella and Gabriel and I look forward to their story. Of course the ending was quite the cliffhanger but it’s a trait that I have come to expect when reading about all things Callahan.

I will say I enjoy reading about the Callahan’s. I have become invested in this saga. But I must speak of the frustration I had while reading this book. There were many, many grammatical errors present throughout the story. I found it maddening to say the least. I can understand an error here and there but not consistently throughout the entire read. I found that the quality of the book compared to the price of the book was not worth what I paid. The Callahan Family deserved better......
I love the Callahans! J.J. McAvoy is a true storyteller that knows how to draw you in and take you on a crime filled ruthless adventure. In Children of Ambition, we learn more about Donatella, the only daughter of Liam and Melody Callahan and the twin sister of Wyatt and sister of the head of the mafia, Ethan. This story was yet again a great one. We got to get a glimpse in the lives of the young Callahans, Helen, Nari, Sedric, and Darcy and we get see what really makes Donatella tick.

At the conclusion of Children of Vice, we saw Donatella at a crossroads between falling in line with the laws of the Family or taking what she thought was rightfully hers. From there we witnessed lessons in her formative years that led her to make every single, ruthless or nah, decision for herself and her family. Then unknowingly and unannounced walks in Gabriel that has EVERY-body intrigued with his know-it-all, the world is my oyster persona.

Gabriel is ruthless in his own manufactured way and I actually liked his character and his disruption to the Callahans, especially his connection with Donatella. Oh, and did I mention he has secrets? Yes that thang has secrets that have secrets and even after he’s given us the best that he’s got, there is yet another layer as to who is truly is and his connection to the Callahans.

Overall, I loved it! I mean I love all of the books in the Ruthless People series. I have read all seven of them and one of them, Declan + Cora, more than once. I have no problem giving this book a 5-stars because of the story all by itself. It will make you laugh, gasp, clinch your pearls, and most importantly bring a tear or two to your eyes. So, I have no other choice, but to tell you to run out and read Children of Ambition by J.J. McAvoy.

How-so-and-ever… J.J., who is editing your books? Who are your Betas? Somebody doesn’t want you to be great! I say this because, if it had not been for the love of your work and for the Callahans, I would have stopped reading way before I finished. I mean a missed word or a subject verb disagreement, here there and there there is fine, mistakes happen, but sweet baby jeezus in a manger, this one was a rough read technically. You are truly a storyteller, so it’s disappointing that your great stories have so many typos. Holla at ya girl if you need any beta readers for Children of Redemption and Vicious Minds. I got you!
