Working Fire A Novel Emily Bleeker 9781542045728 Books

Working Fire is told in dual timelines, the first is through Ellie’s eyes starting the day she gets a call that there’s been a shooting at her sister Amelia’s address and the second is from Amelia’s point of view six weeks prior. The alternating chapters each have a clear, distinct voice as the sisters were both well drawn and multidimensional, I had a strong sense of both of them as individuals as well as a firm grasp regarding the dynamic of their relationship with each other.

While there is definitely a mysterious element at play here, I don’t think it’s the driving force of the book. Yes, I was super curious about exactly what had happened the day Amelia was shot as well as what events sent things into motion, but at its core this is a novel about family relationships and the secrets that can rip them apart. There’s really not much that interests me more than the bond between sisters and some good old fashioned family secrets and Working Fire had plenty of both. While I wouldn’t describe this as twisty, it did keep me guessing and still surprised me a few times.

There was an emotional component to this, Bleeker has an evocative writing style that makes you care about the characters she creates even if you don’t always understand them. This would be perfect for people who don’t want violence or highly disturbing content in their mysteries, it’s on the lighter side yet still manages to pack a decent punch. The ending especially caught me off guard, it was unexpected and fitting.

Working Fire A Novel Emily Bleeker 9781542045728 Books Reviews

Let me start by saying my rating is mostly due to the way the story was told & the ending not seeming to ring true for the character of Emily. With that being said, I didn't like the format of the book-I don't like books that have two different timelines going by alternating chapters. One chapter would be Emily in the present and the next would me Amelia several weeks later until her chapters got to current. Was really disappointed in the character of Emily at the end, what she did just didn't ring true to how her character acted earlier in the book. Up until the end I really loved the bond between the 2 sisters (Amelia & Emily), but the ending just totally made the character of Emily unrecognizable or at lest to me & changed the entire sister relationship in my opinion.. Also didn't like how it ending seem a bit quick, didn't get explanation as to what happened with certain characters or how they ended up where they were. Too many things left unexplained, what caused Steve (Amelia;s husband) to act the way he did; was he always this way or did someting change, It was an ok read, just too many thngs that didn't make sense at the end and left me feeling like I was cheated. Not
sure if I would read this author again as this was my first one and not over impressed with it.
Working Fire has one of those convoluted story lines that jumps back and forth between the end and the beginning. Bleeker starts by telling us what happened, to an assortment of characters none of whom are particularly engaging. Then she spends the novel elaborating a tortured explanation of why it happened, almost none of which is believeable. Along the way she describes the color of every doorknob encountered by the protagonist. I read to the end and still have no idea why recommended this book for me, or anyone else.
This story was about a fire department paramedic who had family members who had also been fire fighters. These parts were well written and fairly true to life most of the time. But then things would happen that were so “off” that it left you shaking your head. A couple of things that were highly improbable, if not impossible, in an otherwise pretty realistic story. But I enjoyed the book in spite of most of those moments. And then it went off a cliff. It would have been just fine without the cliff. It didn’t alter the story really, one way or another. But I hate cliffs, even more so when they are pointless. I will not say anymore. I don’t want to make this a spoiler. I would still recommend the book, it just pushed one of my personal buttons.
I was on vacation when an email came into my inbox about this thriller. I thought I was closing it but I inadvertently hit the wrong button and I purchased it instead. I let it stay in my library for awhile but when I had nothing else to read, I decided to read it since I paid for it. INCREDIBLE THRILLER!!!!!! This has to be one of the most riveting thrillers I have ever read. I love the way it was told with a chapter in the present and then a chapter in the past and then the past catches up to the present and then WOW. The entire time you just have to know how is this coming together so you read more urgently to find out. Emily Beeker, my hat is off to you; I'm a fan. You are incredible. Everyone you MUST read this thriller. You will be very glad you did.
Emily Bleeker has written a twist filled novel full of family secrets, misconceptions, and complex relationships. I have really enjoyed all of her books to date, so I was excited to pre-order this new book from this talented author. 'Working Fire' did not disappoint.

Told in alternating timelines and alternating between sisters, Amelia and Ellie. The book starts off with every EMTs worst nightmare running a call on a family member.
While the scene is set in the first chapter, with a terrible shooting, the story continues... Slowly you piece together the interwoven character filled story as it unfolds and we get a sense of things leading up to this tragedy.

This is an enthralling mystery that keeps the reader madly swiping. Just when it seems one puzzle has been worked out and resolved, there is another piece of that puzzle still not quite fitting. Things that you think are true, are often not true, only partially true, or misconstrued. I honestly did not know until the end who the killer was and why it lead to the crime until the end.

With an intricate plot, Emily Bleeker has written a novel that will stay with the reader long after finishing it.
