Over the years of writing on my own, attending workshops, and sitting through lectures, I found that nothing beats good old-fashioned experience and learning from one’s own mistakes. Those, and honest critiques and criticisms. This book is my honest attempt to hone down all I’ve learned and hand it over to you, so that you don’t (hopefully) make the same mistakes I did in trying to make my books the best they could possibly be. Eight rules to a better book. Not much simpler than that. Put the ink on the white page. Write on.

I believe in reading about the craft of writing and trying to hone the skill. I've read the writing books written by authors Stephen King and Anne Lamott, along with several others. And, I'm also a big highlighter - highlighting information that most hit home and the tips I wanted to remember. With the books I've read, I could take a little from here, a little from there. When I read INK, I stopped highlighting into a quarter of the way in. The whole book, page after page, is nothing but great information, tips, how-to's, showing examples. INK is like stepping out of the jungle and finding the Lost City of Gold. I've learned more with this book than any other I've come across. R.S. Guthrie shows you with his Eight Rules to a Better Book exactly how to write better. Every job field I know has some sort of continuing education built in to keep you current, reminds you what works and what doesn't. Writing is no different. Whether you're published or not, a new writer or seasoned writer, everyone in the writing world can and should take a moment to step back to learn or refresh how to bring their writing to that next level. R.S. Guthrie teaches you how with INK. This isn't a book on how to write but how to take what you have and make it better. Fabulous must-have.

Read it in an hour - and it's worth every penny - he should charge more.

I used it as a checklist, and was happy to find that an experienced writer can still get a lot out of a well-written short book on writing - and especially loved the story written in nothing but dialogue (my similar attempt? I wrote a play - it forces you to do much the same).

I had just discovered a tiny bad habit (not telling you - I have to go root it out), and wish I'd had this book sooner - it would have saved me being embarrassed, not by doing something, but by doing it a bit too much. Check.

I'm going to use this as a starter for every beginner who asks what are the basics. Oh, and his non-fiction voice? Excellent (I followed to buy from the same voice on his blog). He pulls you right in and makes you feel at home.

I kept worrying when I started reading that the wonderful introduction and preface were somehow overselling the contents (it happens) - but am happy to tell you it was not so INK delivers.
Wow. I'm a writer, a pretty good one, I think, but this book blew my smugness to the back of beyond! Again, Wow, I say. Only this author could do that!

This is education, true education, in the only form I can swallow. Chatty, achingly true, and it'll shatter every good opinion you have of yourself all to Hell! Just what the doctor ordered for a person like me who only takes advice from the kindred brain-damaged.

I have great respect for Rob Guthrie, always have. This takes it to quite a new level. For me, a "how to do it" book has to reach me through the gut, and various orifices besides the eye and ear, to do me any good. Well, this morning, I am thoroughly gutted, slain in the spirit, and he's given me a whole lot of thinking to do!

Don't expect A, B, C or 1, 2, 3 here. Rob parks his arse down in a comfy sofa, cracks open a beer, and lays back to just let the communion roll. And, I emphasize, it IS communion, of the spirit. What spirit he's channeling, I couldn't rightly say. But I suspect crazy-a** Scott Morgan is hovering nearby. You'll get cracked between the eyes, you'll chuckle, you'll say "Hmmm, I didn't realize that" as many times as you say "Man, this dude's brilliant!"

And besides all that, anything with a foreword by Scott Morgan, must mean his total support. And anything that Mr. Looneytunes supports, you can take to the bank. Put it in your bong and smoke it! None of us would ever sell another book if these two teamed up and began spewing out tomes left and right. Not that they don't do that already! The term 'prolific' was indeed coined in their lower colons.

My advice? Click on it, right now. Get comfy, lean back, and take a big swig. Good for what ails ya, people. Wayyyy beyond good!

I hardly ever, or I should say almost never, read non-fiction. I find non-fiction books extremely boring. I have only read non-fiction related to Jane Austen (because I am obsessed with her life and books) and cookbooks (yes, cooking is another one of my passions). Sometimes I may read some books on writing, but I normally find them difficult to understand and quite uninteresting. However, when R.S. Guthrie asked for ARC readers, I raised my hand so fast that I almost knocked my laptop off the table. Why? Because I knew that his book would be an easy and interesting read, just like everything he writes. And I wasn't disappointed.

I think that every single person out there who loves writing should read this book. Every writer, every author, every person who simply wants to learn how to write better and more effectively. Dear fellow writers, this book is a must-read. I have learnt more by reading this book than by attending some of the many Creative Writing courses I have taken along the years. The tone of the book is quite helpful, since it makes you feel as if the author is talking straight to you. There are no difficult or technical words that can make your mind wander, and all the rules the author explains are very sensible ones, and I am sure that every writer reading them will agree with me.

This book talks about certain things that all of us writers have ever done at a certain extent, and the author offers us solutions and easy directions on how to avoid those mistakes. The conversational, informal, and funny tone of the book makes of it a fast and highly entertaining read. You will feel as if you are in a writing workshop, where Mr. Guthrie addresses to you directly.

As I already said, this book is a must-read, and it has already made me feel that I need to correct certain things in the writing of my current WIP. See? It works! This book is really useful and you shouldn't hesitate to buy it and read it.
