This had so much potential to be an awesome story. But it ended up just being a good story.

This is the third book in a series and I didn’t know that going into this book, so I would recommend picking up the other books before you start this one as it will be easier for you to follow and more enjoyable.

This piqued my interest because of its exploration of psychology, the mind, and human nature. Those are some of my favorite topics being a psychology student. Anytime I can analyze characters and see great development I get super exciting. I enjoy reading about the motives behind why people do what they do. This just left me lacking more.

The book follows the main character Leilani who is a sheltered child. She is suddenly pulled from her life and school by her mother. Who puts her on a plane and they move to America. As a character, she is shy, quiet, and often quite awkward. She is forever cautious and very careful. She says away from relationships and is deeply afraid of losing people and getting close to them. She was quite a relatable character in many ways and I enjoyed that.

Overall this book was okay. The storyline and writing were interesting but lacking depth. The pace was far too slow and at points, I found myself just wishing it would be over. I thought the ending was little more exciting but it was quite predictable. It was a pleasant and insightful read. I am glad I gave it a chance even with its many issues.

Welcome Reluctant Stranger! Between Two Worlds Volume 3 Evy Journey 9780996247436 Books Reviews

As the third book in the series, it wasn’t my favorite but was still very well done. In the previous books, we are introduced to the intimate stories of the characters within one family, and although we are kept with the same plot in that regard, learning about this new character, Leilani, threw me off a little. Having said that, the story was still interesting and engaging with a completely new viewpoint and background. One thing I like with these books is that they do fit together nicely (except for my irritation with a brand-new face but that is just me) and could easily be read as excellent stand alones. All of these books are well written and you can tell that Journey knows her craft. Leilani’s story was compelling and her complicated meeting and subsequent falling in love with Justin was definitely not your average love story. I am interested in seeing how the family keeps growing and evolving.
Going to be honest, I didn't realize when I purchased this book that I was purchasing the third book in a series. In fact, I didn't realize it until I was quite a few pages into the book. That being said, I definitely think that you /should/ read the other books in this series first, but I was able to read and understand this book without the prior knowledge. This one does have a stand alone feel to it - though I am going to go back and buy the other books as well.

I thought this book in particular started out really well and then started to slow down a bit too much for my liking. It felt like there was just so much thrown at the wall and nothing really stuck. I found some of the accessory characters to be a bit annoying, to be honest. I kind of half-read my way through the end of the story just to say that I finished it.

Perhaps if you read the other books, you will get more out of this one.
It's a good story. There is a lot of exploration of human nature and psychology throughout. It starts off when Leilani, a sheltered, protected child is suddenly taken out of school by her mother, put on a plane with the rest of her siblings, and moved to America. And in the midst of it all, the only thing that's starkly missing is her father.

Leilani's character is somber, quiet, and offers a certain level of maturity infused with sadness. She is forever playing cautious, careful never to get too involved with anyone and always biding her emotions. Her career choice as a healer further strengthens this description of hers. She doesn't really like to have fun, and is quite content with her quiet life in California.

Justin on the other hand has a penchant for humour, a twinkle in his eyes, and an affinity for cooking. When Leilani rescues him from an attack on the street, she vows to keep her distance. But can't.

Just then, she learns the truth about her father and along with Justin, sets out to extradite him from her island country. Overall, this is a nice book. The story is quite interesting, and Leilani's character is built very well. However, it does seem slow in places and kind of slacks off in between, though it does catch up again around the end. Overall, a pleasant read.
Suddenly uprooted from her classroom and her privileged life in Costa Mora, an island on the Pacific, Leilani’s life is about to change drastically. What happened to her father, and why was her family forced to flee? For fifteen years, these questions have not been fully answered, but things are about to change.

When she saves a man from a mugging, she is forced to confront his growing feelings for her. Making her life more complicated is the sudden appearance of the mysterious General Huang. Does he really have news about her father or does he have sinister motives for approaching the family?

Don’t expect an immediate payoff as this story is built around the characters and their interactions. It takes a while to hit its narrative stride. Some readers may not have patience for the dialogue heavy pacing. The story has a fair amount of emotional weight, but it still lacks a sense of cohesiveness. While the plots drags slightly early on, Evy Journey has created engaging, well developed characters, so it will not be difficult to feel invested in them. It is worth noting that Welcome, Reluctant Stranger is book 3 in a series, but it works well as a standalone story.
